Anti-Essay Blog

Anti Essay, Unit 4

The poetic terrorism was very interesting. Some of the things that it told you to go out and do were awesome. For example, kidnap someone and make them happy. People get kidnapped all the time, but do you ever think if the person is far more happier now, then where they were before. OR burglarizing someone’s house, but not stealing anything, but in turn leaving something behind with meaning, such as art of some kind for them to admire. This short essay/ article makes me want to hop right out of my chair and go change the world at this very second.

Street theatre was very interesting to me. Having something prepared, such as a play or short skit and performing it in front of no specific audience, may seem completely crazy and pointless, but it is not. People that do street theatre, do it for the love of the show, they do it to reach out to people, but no one in particular. One of the groups for Anti-essay did this sort of thing for their project. I found this hilarious… the Easter Bunny, Santa, Cupid, the Turkey from Thanksgiving, and a leprechaun all starred in this lovely short comedy. I really admired their courage to go to a big and random group of people to perform this.

The YouTube video that stood out to me was the Chalk art video. I thought it was really cool how people just go out and put these things on sidewalks for people to admire. One of the girls in our class did this for her Anti-essay and it was really cool. It might could possibly become very frustrating if it rains the very next day, but that probably is not the point. The point is to spread a message to people through a creative way of doing things. Chalk art does this and lets you show your creativity to the world.

Camping :]

Camping Trip

Oh, the joys of camping. I, personally had never been camping before, so this was an interesting experience for me. So, as the day started off, we decided to meet at the Phi Delta Theta house at 6:00 p.m. SHARP! Well, needless to say, that did not happen, it really never does. Everyone decided to go get food, or go get things to make smores, or they forgot something, etc. etc. We finally headed out by 7:15 p.m. After about twenty minutes, we finally reach our destination; Greg McKinney’s field. Of course, since we were late, by the time we reach the campsite it starts to get dark. Now, do not forget that we have to still set up all the tents, STILL not everyone is there AND we have not started the fire. By the time we all got set up and everyone arrived at the site it was almost nine. Then they decided that it would be a good time to start the fire. I absolutely loved how we all just stayed out by the campfire and were just able to sit and talk and be chill with everyone for a total of at least four hours. Some made smores, some tried to roast hotdogs… emphasis on TRIED, others just sat around, listened to music and talked the night away. By about one a.m. I was tired. I had set up my entire tent and I was ready for bed. Sad thing is, I ended up waking up at 5:45 a.m. and NOT being able to go back to sleep. No matter how hard I tried, I failed. After about wrestling around for about twenty minutes, I decided to pack up my stuff, like others had done already, and head out to my own warm bed. I ended up sleeping until 5:00 p.m. But, overall it was a very nice time and I can not wait to go again.

Moving Into My Own Place

Moving Into A New House

Ah, the joy of being out of the dorms. Not having to share a room, a bathroom, a public space….it is AMAZING! As of March 27th, 2009, I leased my own house with two of my best friends. I am thankful for this decision everyday. I do not miss the dorms one bit. The only thing that completely sucked was having to move all of my stuff from my dorm, to my new house with a small 2003 Ford Focus and a 2003 Chevy Caviler. I had so many pictures on my wall in the dorm it was ridiculous. It took me nearly an hour to get everything off of my walls and in boxes to take to the new house. After getting everything moved in from my dorm, the hard part was having to go to Knoxville to get all my furniture. Let me tell you, I picked probably the worst day possible to go get my furniture, not only was it cold, but it was pouring down rain like no one’s business. By the time we got back to Cookeville, my mattress and box spring were completely soaked, even after being wrapped in plastic multiple times. But, on the upside, it dried within a few hours and I was able to sleep on it that night. After many trips to Knoxville, and many trips to Walmart and Big Lots, the house is almost complete. All I am missing is one piece of furniture and that is not bad at all. Our living room is gorgeous and we have the cutest kitchen around. And last but not least, we also live across the street from two more of our best friends! That is probably the most convenient thing ever, having two of your friends who do most the stuff that you do, right across the street from you!

Public Space

Public Space

Public Spaces are all around us. Anywhere from a shopping mall to a small town park, both of which are public spaces. A point of reference the first author made was that most public spaces look the same. Like for example, a grocery store looks about the same everywhere you go. The layout for one, no matter what company is usually the exact same. You walk in, produce is first, then meat, then the deli, then the dry goods, then the baking things, then the cereal, then the freezer section, then last but not least the dairy section. Am I right? Thought so. The same idea goes to most public spaces, such as buildings, parks, doctors offices, hospitals, etc. Churches are also known as public places. Religion is very important to a lot of citizens in the United States, and if was not for churches we would not have a public gathering place in order to spread the word of God to others. Malls are also public places. Oh lord, where do I begin. Shopping malls have become a phenomenon. I believe the cities are competing on which city can have the biggest and greatest mall of all time. As time has progressed though, shopping malls have subsided to more of an outdoor shopping mall experience where the stores are all self standing and are not under one big roof. Another thing that we do not think about is our behavior when we are in a public space. Cell phones for example, people have become way more lenient than how they were four years ago. It astonished me that twenty nine percent of people approved of people using their cell phone while in a restaurant and over seventy six people use their cell phones will behind the wheel of a vehicle. The entire idea of public space is different from what it used to be, but honestly, I like the change that is happening.

Relay for Life Weekend

Relay for Life Weekend

Relay for Life was one of the best experiences on campus for me so far. There had been groups preparing for this event since January. The point of Relay for Life is to raise money for cancer victims. As a campus, we raised a ton of money. There was every sorority and fraternity on campus there, there was the exercise science group, there was the music group, everyone was there. The hours for Relay for Life are 6:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m. They seem unreal, right? No joke. I got to the site (intramural fields) around 7:00 p.m. and stayed till around 9:30 p.m., when I decided I needed a short break and went with some friends to see “Obsessed”, great movie. I highly recommend it. After the movie, we returned around midnight, only to see that the night had just begun. Kappa Sigma had constructed a jail and charged a dollar to put someone in jail, but two to bail them out, or three to bail themselves out. This seemed to be the entertainment of the evening and they must have made a lot of money. Another very popular fundraiser was Pi Kappa Alpha’s spraying war. They had a few brothers go around with water guns, and you could pay them a dollar to spray whoever you wanted. Needless to say, there were people being sprayed with water and put in jail all night long. The event ended up only lasting until 5:00 a.m., but it was still overly exhausting. I will never forget it though, having fun with your friends and raising money for a good cause is a great way to spend your Friday night. Though, the next morning was not as enjoyable, seeing as Phi Mu had to get up at 9:00 a.m. to do another fundraiser, but after all was said and done, it was all worth it knowing that you were helping someone else in need.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day Party

My, my, my. Oh the joy of St. Patrick’s Day. Funny thing is on the actual holiday of St. Patrick’s Day I was in the most anti-social mood possible. There was a huge party going on around me, and all I could bring myself to do was sit in the recliner, with my sweatpants and glasses on and read a book. This is not like me at all, but for some reason I was content just sitting and observing everyone else doing their thing. I ended up going to bed in the middle of the big party, even though I did not have class the next morning. That upcoming Friday though, was a completely different story. Sigma Chi always has the biggest St. Patrick’s Day party possible. It was unreal. All of my sorority sisters, all my friends, everyone was there. The Sigma Chi house was packed, you had to go through security and sign a list with your name on it just to be able to go in. There was dancing all in the living room, they had hired an awesome DJ to play music all night, they had a nice setup outside for everyone to hang out and catch some air, they had certain rooms filled with groups of people just talking and relaxing, it was awesome. I have never had so much fun in my entire life. After the party (around two a.m.) there was a big group of us that decided to go to Waffle House. Going to Waffle House is always an adventure, you always see someone you know and the waiter always remembers the interesting ones. After getting a ton of food for a very cheap price, we all decided to go home and crash, only to do it all over again the next morning, minus the humongous crowd from the night before.

Defining Racism

I found this article very informing and very interesting. I like how in the beginning of the article it states how some people do not even think racism still exists and are completely in the dark about the entire issue. I believe that racism is definitely more predominant in the South, and people up North might not be exposed to it as much as the citizens in the South. People also assume things that are clearly not true. For example, the student that said, “it wasn’t his fault they were no Black writers” is an idiot. This student has been uneducated and completely withheld from some of the greatest authors in history. I really enjoyed the statement of how “none of us would like to introduce ourselves as smog-breathers, but if we live in a smoggy place, how can we avoid breathing the air?” This statement is so true. If one person lives in a small town in Alabama they are more likely to view a Black person differently than if that said person lived in New York City. It is very true that in the United States that white people are definitely in higher power, and have more authority than ones of color. It is not right at all, but it is happening all around us all the time. The point made, saying that if you are white there are a lot of things you do not have to worry about if said person was black is painfully true. Parents do not have to worry about sending their children to school and having them be ridiculed because of their race, or have people follow them around a store thinking that they might steal something. Things like that is what makes racism very alive and kicking today. It is all around us. I recently wrote a paper about an experiment done with the difference between a white and black person shopping, and the outcome stunned me. Even to this day people have to worry about if they are going to be treated differently because of the color of their skin, and to be honest that really upsets me.

Dealing With a Dud of a Boss

People that have held a job at least once in their life have most likely dealt with a boss or manager or two that they could not stand. In today’s work force, you do not usually see managers that have worked for that particular company for a long amount of time. Here lately, you will see managers that might have worked in a certain field, but not that specific company. When managers are put into a position that they are not comfortable with and not familiar with, there is a very slim chance they will do well. In his article “The Dilbert Principle,” Scott Adams addresses this issue in a satirical manner. In order for a business to run properly, it is going to have to have a manager that is fully aware of the responsibilities and duties of that particular job.
Most people in the work force now, and in the past has had a problem with their boss in particular. In “The Dilbert Principle” article, Adams addresses the issue of how the work force has drastically changed from when he started work back in 1979. When Adams was in the workforce the Peter Principle was in full swing. The Peter Principle works by “which capable workers were promoted until they reached their level of incompetence” (Adams 404). Another way to state this principle is that the employees work their way up through the company and go through all the steps below the management position before they are given a specific position. I have had a personal experience on this matter and completely agree with Adams’s theory. I used to work retail with the Target Corporation and had to deal with a manager that knew nothing about his job. The only thing that the manager was capable of doing were the small amount of things he learned in his short training period. This short training period did not give him any amount of hands on experience in retail or any experience dealing with guests (also known as customers). Seeing as this training he was given did not prepare him for the job he was about to endure, he failed miserably. I used to work Guest Service, also known as returns, and I periodically would get a difficult guest and have to get a manager. The only problem was that every time I had to ask for him he would completely contradict what I had just told the guest, because he did not know the policy completely. So in turn, every time he contradicted what I said, was another guest that got they way they wanted and it messed up the system in the computer because the manager did not know what he was doing. Once he got “dismissed” from Target, we got another manager that had worked for the corporation for a longer amount of time and worked their way up to the manager position. After they moved to my Target store, the store started doing much better in sales, returns, etc.
After having a manager that is fully aware of the duties of their job, the business will run much more efficiently. I used to work for Food City and realized how correct Adams’s theory is. I noticed that when a manager was hired from within the company itself, after moving up through every level possible, the manager ran the business much better, than the manager with no experience in the business beforehand. This manager knew what to do in every situation brought their way. They were able to fix things properly and as quickly as possible. The manager before the most recent one, had not worked for the company before and had to ask people below them in order to fix problems and issues brought their way.
Using the ideas of Adams in the article would definitely make a business run much smoother and more efficiently. By getting a manager that has worked for that particular business for a long amount of time and has worked their way up to the manager position, the business will be able to run the way it should. It also will make other employees that are below the manager’s position so much happier and more content with a manager that actually knows what he is doing. When the manager has no experience in the job itself, the atmosphere is much more negative and employees get frustrated more easily. In turn, everyone would be able to work in a nice and friendly atmosphere more often than if a manager with no experience in the specific field would be able to bring.

Images...

The first part of this assignment is called THE IRON MADIEN. The beginning of this is so true. Every girl strives to be like the women in magazines. Its sickening, but all women do it. I mean, even men do it. When women look in magazines and strive to be like the women they see, they are setting themselves up for disappointment. It is physically impossible to be completely flawless. Showing women on magazines that have been air brushed, just makes day by day life harder on the average women.
The theory/thought that there is a "beauty contest in life" is completely true. No matter what, everyday people are striving to be better looking than someone else. People want to be skinner, prettier, have better hair, better legs, bigger muscles, whiter teeth, smaller pores...etc, etc.
Being thin is a very popular thing now a days, in this reading i found that a model a generation or so ago weighed 8% less than the average woman, but now models are finding themselves 95% less than the average woman. If that isn't a reality check, I don't know what is. 95% is an outrageous number for people to be striving to be like, it is nearly impossible.
Overall this first part of the reading assignment really made me angry. It made me realize how much we let television, people's thoughts and the media tell us how we should be. Its ridiculous that we allow ourselves to fall into that shallow trap, but we do anyway.
I found the second part of the assignment very interesting, the fact that an ad sends you different messages just by where their eyes are gazing. The idea and make of a re-write is awesome. I think it portrays an image that most people want to say and think, but won't until someone makes that first step and does a re-write. Last but not least, my personal favorite is all of the Public Health Messages. Those are the ones I pay the most attention to, and in order to do that they must be eye catching, and the ones shown do that very very well.

My First Blog (about the reading assignment)

My reading assignment was from the book They Say I Say. The opening part of this reading was very interesting and it caught my attention right off the bat. The author did a really good job with the hook. I really liked the point that the author made when he said that teachers needed to teach subjects that the students liked first, then move on to the other subjects. I liked his story about him growing up and not being interested in school work at all. I could relate his experiences to mine when he said that he could read all kinds of sports magazines and really get into it, but when it came to school work he just could grasp it as well. I love it when older people share stories of their past. The author's points were very valid in my belief. I believe he would be a great teacher and would be able to make students more in tune with their school work. When i was in high school I never got into any of the readings. I always would go off and read other material other than my school work. I can not remember the last book I actually fully read completely thru for a high school assignment. If I had a teacher in high school that tried to reach out and fully hit my interests, I might have actually gotten into the school work more. The school work always bored me and I did the least I could do to just pass by. I was very glad he wrote this article and voiced his points about this sitation.
